Subject: Reliability and Maintenance Gaps in Campus Escalators

There has been a recurring problem regarding the campus escalators, especially in the North Academic Center(NAC) Building. There have been repeated malfunctions and maintenance that have created accessibility to travel around campus very challenging for students, faculty and visitors particularly during peak class hours and is also not very aesthetically appealing for a prestigious College. The purpose of this memo is to outline the impact of this issue and to recommend improvements that keep these escalators moving while being safe and reliable.

Basis of the Problem

Throughout the day, most of the escalators are on maintenance or under construction. I know that the North Academic Center building is old and the infrastructure is outdated or aging, and I know the connection CCNY has with Con Edison and saving energy is a key aspect at CCNY. There have been days where CCNY saves energy by turning off lights for some floors and I think that’s fine but I think the major problem is when CCNY shuts off escalators when it isn’t peak hours. Some students still have class whenever it isn’t peak hour and it still affects students trying to arrive to class on time.

I also believe it would improve student mental health all around as working elevators and escalators as it would provide psychological comfort to students who are stressed and in a rush. It would also provide for better social interactions and community building as working escalators and elevators won’t stress out students rushing to class and take time to talk with others.

Ensuring that escalators are operational throughout the day and not only during peak hours, would improve efficiency, reduce stress for students and faculty, and enhance the college professional image. I respectfully urge the administration to review maintenance schedules and energy saving policies to find a balanced solution that maintains safety while improving reliability. Addressing this issue would demonstrate a commitment to accessibility, student well being and institutional excellence
